How have you considered genre in creating your media text and what signifiers pinpoint the genre?

We have used several different codes and conventions to portray our genre of social realism (teen urban drama) We used a underground subway which reflected an urban setting also the costumes used suggests stereotypical teenagers in todays society. The graffiti on the background of the poster emphasizes the stereotype placed on teenagers. The movie title emulates graffiti font. the repertoire of elements

Have you subverted any conventions? If so, why?

We kept the conventions the same as we wanted to fulfill the audiences expectations of a social realism film gene.

What kind of media producer would produce your kind of media text?

A feature film producer such as Damian jones who is successful in the british film industry would produce our media text due to them being familiar and experienced in producing in the particular and similar drama.

does your media text show fluidity of genre or is it similar to older media texts of the same genre? If its different how?

Our media text shows fluidity as it is a modern genre that has developed over the last few years. We consider the zeitgeist by using social realism to capture the key topics in todays society, such as knife and gun crime, gang culture, sex alcohol and drugs. This way we fulfilled our audiences expectations of a typical social realist film.

We chose that particular photograph for the poster because of the setting. As a group we decided that the graffiti on the wall behind was quite effective and contributed towards the urban culture theme. We followed the conventions of a typical film poster by adding quotes from newspapers at the top with the film titile beneath. We then added small text at the bottom of the poster with the names of editors, directors and producers in order to stick to the generic conventions.

Below are some of the photographs we considered using for the front cover for our magazine and poster. We experimented with the back grounds in order to see which would look best on the cover of our magazine and poster. I thought that the locations we found made interesting backgrounds for our photographs which fit the urban style we were looking for. The images represent the theme of our movie trailer and show the deprived areas in which teenagers hang out in today's society. The costumes and setting used show consumers a sneak peek of what to expect from the film trailer and the themes. We purposely used typical on trend urban teenage clothing for the models to reflect the genre and targe audience. When taking the pictures, we had to ensure we used the techniques of a generic magazine cover, such as rule of thirds; this meant leaving a space on one side of the models. This way we could fit on straplines for example.

KiDULTHOOD is about the lives of several teenagers growing up in a deprived area of West London. These teenagers are brought up in a unstable enviroment and are tempted to do things they know are wrong and illegal. London is well known for its gang violence and this film portrays this. The film represents serious and real life issues of what some teenagers go through in today’s society. The target audience for this film is teenagers and young adults mainly aimed at people aged between 15-25. This explains why so many people who are in this age group may watch it as they can relate to the issues and struggles of the actors.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rhrJBUMxNMQ - Adulthood trailer

The genre for the adulthood and 4 3 2 1 trailers are:

  • Urban
  • Action
  • Social realist

The two movie trailers above have inspired me to create an urban style teaser trailer as part of my coursework. I believe the urban theme I want to create will capture today’s corrupt community for teenagers and attract the right target audience. The movie tralier was successful for both these fims as they used the right codes and conventions. For example:

  • Establishing shots
  • Panning
  • Close up- shows emotion
  • Canted angles- shows chaos
  • POV shot
  • Birds eye view

The characters are portrayed as they are in today’s media. They are stereotyped as:

  • Single moms
  • Drug dealers
  • Prostitutes
  • Gangsters
  • Police

Adulthood is set I a stereotypical urban city showing everyday life for teenagers struggling to succeed in life.

Adulthood narrative:

  • Sam is released from jail after 6 years for killing Trife,
  • He gets himself into trouble the day he is let out of jail and has to work his way out of it,
  • He wants to change so try’s to make up with the people he upset and hurt,
  • These people want revenge on him.

Will he create something positive from the destruction he caused?
